Tirano Centro Storico

Tirano Centro Storico

I have visited the small city of Tirano in the Valtellina region of Lombardia in Italy numerous time. This is because part of my family is from Tirano. During these visits I have taken numerous photos that I collect in this evolving online gallery.

Tirano is a small city of 10-12 000 inhabitants. It is not a quiet city as there is a busy road passing through the city center. However, as soon as you move away from the main road there are numerous narrow streets with charming houses and cafés and shops. You can walk from one side of the city to the other side in around 30 minutes. On one side is the Sanctuary of Madonna di Tirano, on the opposite side the tower Torre Torelli. The city is in a valley, with high mountains surrounding it. On these mountains there are several small villages and there is a lot of hiking and trekking going on during the summer months. Switzerland is a walk away, and the city has old and strong bounds to their neighboring country with many Tiranes working in Switzerland.

Another connection to Switzerland is the Trenino Rosso, the red train of Tirano or the Bernina Express. The train trip is through the Bernina pass and ends in Saint Moritz in Switzerland. The trip and the trains are part of the UNESCO world heritage. A lot of tourists come to Tirano either boarding or getting off these trains, which are operated by the Swiss railways.

Here are some of the photos I have selected. The photos were taken in the period of 2007-2025 and I will keep the gallery updated with new photos from my future visits.
