Photographs from Hell

Photographs from Hell

If you take the old road –and not the highway –from Trondheim to Værnes airport, you will meet a varied landscape where nature and man-built environments exist side-by-side. It is a winding road that passes small towns and industrial areas, ending, just before the airport, in a small town called Hell.

I have been driving this road numerous times, but never stopped properly to photograph the scenery. However, in October 2008 I did a dedicated photo drive with my friend Renato from Porto. Renato is a photographer and was doing a photo book of the midnight sun in Norway. We drove through this road and stopped in several places and took some photos.

I don’t do this kind of photo shoots so often. Maybe I should. The weather that day was a bit unstable, with rainbows and clouds and sun replacing each other. This gave a nice contrast to the photos. Originally I had made an album where the photos were sepia. I remade the album, added some more photos, and processed them using a preset in Lightroom that gives a contrasty black-and-white.

The atmosphere in the photos is a mixture of silence, wind, industry, and nature. Some photos show the rough seaside nature that is typical of Norway. The area we passed through is a well-known industrial area where socialist labor party has traditionally been very strong. I almost feel that socialist, down-to-earth vibe in some of the photos. I like these photos a lot. I hope you also enjoy them.
